The qualification that will be offered to the marine industry is the TDM20307 Certificate II in Transportation and Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations -Coxswain)
The qualification is for offshore and inshore commercial crew and is also recommended for all recreational boaters.
A person holding the above is qualified to act as;
- Master on a commercial vessel less than 12 m long on inshore operations (ie. within 15 nautical miles of the coast)
- Master on a fishing ship less than 15 metres in length within Fishing Ship Operational Area
- Engineer on a fishing or trading vessel less than 12 metres in length with engines less than 250 kW for inshore operations (ie within 15 nautical miles of the coast)
- Mate on a fishing or trading vessel less than 12 metres in length for operations out to within 200 nautical miles of the coast
Therefore, the coxswain 'ticket' is a dual deck and engineering certificate and can be endorsed or limited depending on the service, experience and requirements of the candidate. Various states have restrictions or endorsements allowing or restricting what a qualified coxswain holder may do within certain specified zones within the state's waters.
